Tiny Breed Pup Training
Exactly why dog lovers possess this preconceived belief that small dogs are more hard to discipline than medium sized or large breed dogs, I will never be able to know. Housebreaking a puppy, despite its size should not pose a problem.
Small dog training, is not different from training a pup of any other larger sized breed. While training any pup will have its peculiarities, pertaining to its breed, practically all other features remain identical, and the strategy to training the dog should not be different, not withstanding its size.
Having said that, I will grant an allowance here, and say yes to the argument that small dog training may present issues in two arenas, (1) Aggression and (2) Puppy crate training. Nevertheless, this is not because the fact that it is a small breed dog, but in every instance, because of the owner.
If a smaller breed puppy is aggressive and cannot be disciplined, or if a smallish breed pup cannot be bathroom trained or poses challenges in being toilet trained, it is the owner who has ignorantly contributed to this problem. Let us analyze how and why.
Aggression.
Small dogs are liked because they are sweet, they are like playthings. Owners get pleasure from having their puppy sit on their laps. This particular indulgence is where the problem begins. The basic aggressive trait of the dog, is to take ownership over its sector, its food, even its owner; all puppies desire to be the alpha dog.
It is the ruthless streak in the dog that provokes it to climb on to the lap of its owner, specially when there are lots of persons seated in the room.
This is a clear act of ruthlessness. Instead of chastising and checking the pup, every owner bar no one, would fondle the puppy, despite the fact it jumped on to their lap without being asked to, fostering the aggressive streak in the dog. In this way the owner has given into the pup's basic instinct to be the alpha dog.
Growling and getting mad at a much bigger dog is another clear act of unwanted anger. To the owner, and even the people nearby, this is regarded as cute, mainly because one dog is small while the other is large. Most owners cuddle the pooch instead of scolding it, when it displays this aggression towards a larger dog.
These are but good examples as to why small size breed pet dogs are aggressive, and not because small dog training is complicated.
Crate Training
Owners tend to haul their small puppies around where ever they are, even when they are at home and that makes it very difficult to house break them
It is, as if by instinct that the owners of miniature breed dogs to cart the animal to the spot where the pooch should go to the bathroom and then lug it back into the house.
It is this pattern of carrying the pup to its toilet place that is the root of all complications. In addition, because the pup is normally carried around so much it has no way of it suggesting to or notifying the owner that it has to go to the bathroom.
Small dog training starts with treating the dog as any other medium sized or larger sized dog. They have to be shown their bathroom area on a leash. If owners cease carrying their tiny breed dogs they would have no troubles in training them.
Dog crate training, is the most exciting part of pup training, and so it must be, even in Small Dog Training.
