An Adolescent Makes Up His Mind To See His Healthcare Professional About His Alcohol Dependency Signs

Mitchell is a sixteen-year-old youth who has eventually decided to go and see his family doctor about his abusive drinking. At first, Mitchell thought he would be able to simply go on the Internet, look for some basic alcohol info and come to a decision whether or not he was an alcoholic.

Not surprisingly, he found scores of websites and blogs that listed some of the common alcohol consumption problems. That's the positive news. The bad news, regrettably, was that Mitchell showed evidence of more than a few of these problems.

As a case in point, Mitchell has been drinking quite a bit more than usual and he has started to have more intense arguments with the young girl he has been dating. In much the same way, for the first time in his life he has been suffering through sleeping problems. If this wasn't enough, Mitchell often has felt depressed and on an escalating basis he has been manifesting less than normal attentiveness at school.

So Mitchell finally made up his mind to make a phone call to his family doctor and make an appointment. When Mitchell arrived at the family physician's office, he openly notified the healthcare professional about the apprehension he feels about his abusive drinking behavior.

The family doctor told Mitchell that it was wise of him to attend to his drinking problems, he gave Mitchell an in depth physical evaluation, and recommended that he talk to his parents about going into an out-patient alcohol treatment program that was managed by Doctor Hauser, one of his doctor friends who is an alcohol abuse and substance abuse specialist.

In much the same way, when Mitchell articulated that he has been feeling a sense of despair more regularly, the family doctor told Mitchell that alcoholism and depression regularly occur in the same person. Thus, the physician also recommended that Mitchell talk to his Mother and Father about seeking counseling to attend to his depression. In fact, Mitchell would be able to go to the local mental health clinic and schedule an appointment with Doctor Galloway, a renowned counseling psychologist who specializes in treating teenagers.

The doctor made it a point to tell Mitchell that he might not inevitably be alcohol dependent, but that he was plainly drinking in a careless manner. Stated another way, Mitchell was engaging in teenage alcohol abuse.

The family doctor then told Mitchell that the reason he suggested alcohol rehab in the first place was because he wanted him to face his drinking issues, make sure that he prevented them from getting worse, and start to live in a more healthy manner, even if it meant that he had to completely abstain from drinking. In brief, by successfully treating his alcohol drinking problems, Mitchell would be able to get his hazardous drinking under control and stop the negative sequence of events that could most likely result in alcoholism.

Mitchell justifiably did not look forward to facing his parents about his depression and his drinking problems. And he certainly did not want to face the thought of getting admitted into an alcohol treatment center. And lastly, he was not ecstatic about going to a counselor about his sense of gloom. Despite these apprehensions, however, Mitchell in reality felt some psychological relief for the first time in several months because he ultimately gave up making excuses for himself and finally made up his mind to do something positive about his abusive drinking.
