A Young Male Needs Counseling For His Acute Depression, Relationship Difficulties, And For His Drug Dependency And Alcoholism

Around eight months ago I had breakfast with a forty-five-year-old man named Benjamin who suffers from severe depression, has relationship problems, and who is dependent on drugs and alcohol. As affirmed by Benjamin, it is his alcohol and drug dependency and his intense depression that has had the most to do with his perpetual relationship difficulties.

As articulated by Benjamin, he is so defeated by his relationship issues and by both of his medical problems that he, for all intents and purposes, has little or no impetus to complete much of anything. What is particularly unfortunate about this is that earlier in his life, Benjamin managed to complete three semesters of grad school in Italian.

Benjamin's situation makes me question if he is an illustration of an individual who can look within and perceive his drinking problems and drug addiction and do something constructive about these problems. Or, conversely, if he is someone who has to hit the very bottom before he gets alcohol and drug addiction counseling that results in long lasting sobriety.

It may be asked how therapy would help his alcohol and drug addiction. For starters, there are several newly discovered physician-prescribed drugs that can help Benjamin avoid a drug or an alcohol relapse, help him through the drug and alcohol detoxification process, and help him through his withdrawal symptoms. Second, in therapy he could also learn more about his alcoholism symptoms and also about the diverse stages of alcoholism.

Third, Benjamin would learn to acknowledge the fact that there is absolutely nothing beneficial about substance abuse and careless and hazardous drinking. In a similar way, he would also learn that engaging in one or both of these unhealthy circumstances is the route to deteriorating health, a premature death, shattered relationships, financial difficulties, poor work and school performance, and legal problems. Fourth, counseling for his depression and for his relationship problems might help him deal with these medical conditions more successfully and help create less of a need for him to engage in additive behavior. And finally, in rehab he could also learn more about the different symptoms of alcoholism that he has manifested.

Since Benjamin lacks the motivation to accomplish much of anything in his life, it is plain to see that he urgently needs a little hope for a more fulfilling lifestyle. And the unfortunate thing is that hope is all around Benjamin if he could only get to the point in life to get the treatment he needs for his intense depression and alcohol dependency and drug addiction and stay with his treatment routine.

Benjamin is clearly too young to be crushed in life. He doesn't understand this right now but if he can learn how to remove himself from alcohol and drugs through alcohol and drug therapy and get the counseling he requires for his acute depression, he can turn his life around and start living with passion, self-respect, and direction.

Better relationships, a wonderful life, self esteem, and affirmative change are clearly a reality for Benjamin. But only if he can become inspired to obtain the medical treatment he needs, follow through with his treatment program, live his life in a sober and healthy manner, and learn how to acquire a more positive attitude about his existence.
